The above and beyond program is a new feature the Running From Cancer race is thrilled to announce. We would like to acknowledge and honour people in our community who have gone above and beyond the limit in their endeavor to benefit the patient programs at the Windsor Regional Cancer Centre.
Every year we will choose one person whom we feel has gone above and beyond their limits to make a significant contribution to the Windsor Regional Cancer Centre. To help us select the right candidate, we encourage you to nominate anyone you feel worthy of this recognition however small or large their contribution may be. Please email their name and tell us why they deserve to be the next above and beyond “ Star”.
This year the Running From Cancer Race will present Ettore Bonato, the first Above and Beyond “Star”. Inspired by his compassion, kindness and enthusiasm to help others, Ettore Bonato truly is a “Star”.
Born in Ottawa, Ettore moved to Windsor as a child and has called Windsor home ever since. Schooled in both Windsor and Toronto to be a professional stylist, Ettore began his career in 1982 working at a few other salons before he opened Ettore’s Aveda Salon on Ottawa Street.
In 2004 Ettore’s partner of sixteen years was diagnosed with colon cancer. Determined and confident for a positive outcome, they would proceed with the recommended chemotherapy treatment . A long road lay ahead for them of frequent visits to the Centre and battling the effects of chemotherapy. Ettore questioned the cost of this treatment one day and was shocked to learn approximately $ 10,000.00.
Three years since Peter’s diagnosis, his cancer remains under control, and his future optimistic. Ettore has become compelled and determined to raise $ 10,000.00 to give back to the Centre what he feels the Centre has given him……hope! Ettore will participate in the Running from Cancer 10K race this July 29, 2007. Experienced at fundraising, Ettore fully knows the challenges that lie ahead, yet proceeds eagerly!
